Pakistan: More Political Crackdown
Following the arrest of jihadist leader Hafeez Mohammed Saeed of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, Gen. Musharraf has ordered the arrest of two major Islamist leaders. Via Geo TV reports here and here:
Opposition leader in National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman was put into house arrest in his official resident in Islamabad late Saturday night, Geo News reported. Qazi Hussain Ahmed, President Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) was put into house arrest in his Lahore residence late Saturday night.
It goes on to show who really runs the show in Pakistan - the Army. All the talk about Islamist takeover 'threat' is baloney. They use the Islamists in token protests if it suits them and come down on the very same groups once the situation goes slightly overboard. More such crackdown and counter-protests by Islamists can be expected until President Bush's visit there during March.
